Looking forward to your gallery submissions!
400 pixel image size minimumdA had an old rule that for images submitted to the photography galleries, the minimum size was at 400 pixels on the shortest side. Images smaller than 400 pixels on any side could only be submitted as "scraps."
dA doesn't keep much in the way of standards anymore, but I always agreed with this one and will continue to hold it for the group - it's just rare to have to worry about it, because it's rare to see any files smaller than this in the group submissions.
But it has come up recently, so am making general note of it.
Image submissions for the group galleries should be at least 400 pixels on the shortest side.
Possible exception would be for extra-wide panoramic images.
Welcome to new member!Welcome a new member to Respect-Us:
Please read the detailed submission guidelines on the front page (below the current journal entry box) so you know which images meet the group's themes. And we look forward to seeing your images become part of the Respect-Us galleries!
Welcome to new members!Welcome to two new group members!
Looking forward to seeing your images within our galleries, and if you haven't already, please make sure to read the detailed submission guidelines (linked in the box below the journal entry box on the front page), so you know what images will be acceptable for submission within this group's particular themes.
Thank you and welcome once again!
Watchers who apply for membershipA note for our 4200 or so Watchers of Respect-Us who are not members of the group:
As noted in the front page membership requirements box, becoming a deviantWatcher of this group is a requirement for membership.
The admin message center only shows NEW devWatch notifications. So if you are already a Watcher from a time before you apply for membership, we will NOT see a devWatch notification for you at the time you apply. That means it will appear that you have not followed the group's membership requirements in becoming a Watcher first, and your membership request will be delayed or declined.
So if you are a Watcher of the group who later decides to apply for membership - PLEASE COMMENT ON YOUR MEMBERSHIP REQUEST that you are already a Watcher of the group.
And of course, YES, you still have to meet the other membership requirements to be approved!
Incorrect folder submissionsThere have been a number of recent gallery submissions made to the wrong group gallery folder. I know this is sometimes a case of accidental mis-click, and sometimes a case of not paying attention.
I know that PolarExtremesStudio has, in the past, often accepted these and moved them to the correct folder with a comment to "next time please submit to correct folder." That is always his prerogative; he sometimes still votes on submissions, and so this may sometimes still happen.
Personally, I don't have the time or inclination to do that on an ongoing basis, so for submissions made to the wrong folders, I simply decline them.
As always, if your submission has been declined, the most likely reasons are:
1. Does not meet group gallery criteria for subject matter;
2. Does not meet group gallery criteria for quality;
3. Submitted to incorrect folder.
If considering those three reasons doesn't help you understand why your submission was declined, you can, if you wish, leave a comment on t
Membership applications pendingHi everyone, there are several membership applications pending in the group's message center right now, and I just wanted to mention that I'm in the midst of an insanely busy weekend at my studio, and I'll be able to take a closer look at those applications/applicants' galleries in the next couple of days.
* For those who have become watchers of the group before applying, as specified in the membership requirements, you'll see this journal as a watcher of the group, and know what's going on!
* For those where I've left a comment on your application asking a question - if you won't take a moment to answer that question, you will not be approved for membership.
* For those being directed to look at the front page membership requirements, it probably means there's something lacking about your application that you could fix. Go read the membership requirements - they aren't complicated.
* For those who haven't become watchers, you probably won't see this, but I'll say it anyway, becoming a

Ten Portrait Photography TipsPeople & Portrait Photography
Check your Angles
Avoid unflattering angles, don't frame your model with their arms or legs chopped off unless it works for the image. If in doubt, fully frame them and do the chopping afterwards in post-processing! Don't forget to check that the tops of their heads and their feet are in focus. Missing feet are disconcerting!
Be the Director
As the Photographer, most people will be looking to you for direction. There's no time to be shy when you're behind the camera! Keep calm to help your model remain relaxed but make sure they're not made to feel awkward if you lack giving instruction. Pose them well, avoid direct bright sunlight and check out your background.
Eye contact...or not
Eye contact isn't always necessary, in fact candid journalistic style photographs often work best. Your subject doesn't have to be looking directly at the camera for it to be a successful shoot, but yo
Lighting in Portrait PhotographyPeople and Portraits week
I'm writing this tutorial of sorts, for all of you portrait photographers out there seeking advice about the lighting in your photographs. First off let me be clear in saying that I am no expert, or rather I do not claim to be, I sometimes do things in unusual ways, and my tips and advice are definitely not the only ones you should follow. This journal is just me giving you my take on how to get great lighting for your shots
1. Never shoot when the sun is at its highest peak.
Depending on where you live and your climate, this might vary, but I usually never shoot between the hours of 12-4 unless I'm shooting indoors, or it's a cloudy day. If you're doing an outdoors shoot and the sun is blasting on your model, you are very unlikely to get good results. Not only will it be uncomfortable for your model, and make it difficult to pose with a natural expression (sun in your eyes, worst feeling in the world),
Feature Friday: Haikyuu!!
Haikyuu!! (ハイキュー!!), a manga and anime series that focuses around volleyball player Shoyo Hinata as he strives to become the best he can, has gained popularity both in and out of Japan since its manga debut in 2012, and more recently due to the anime adaptation that began airing in April 2014.
Deviants around the globe have taken to Hinata and his team, and have made a variety of incredible creations in homage to the series. Check out these deviations!

How to tell a story through portraiturePeople & Portrait Photography
I'm sure many people will agree with me that the People & Portrait Galleries here on deviantART are often dominated by Expressive, Emotive and (depending on taste!) beautiful portraiture captures. Photographs capture a moment and can tell a story, but often these kind of shots are predominantly to showcase clothing, makeup, features or bodies. There is another level to Portraiture and knowing how to tell a story through your camera lens is one of the key elements of documenting a person
"It's not just about an image, it's about the person in that image, who they are, where they've been - what they're doing."
Here in the UK, particuarly in the Summer months, there's almost a daily opportunity to go out and capture a story. I recently wandered around an Art Exhibition and managed to snap a fair few artists at work. To tell someone's story without relying on emotion within their facial features and body language,
UNDER RATED, UNDER VIEWED | ilonashevchishina*Under-viewed, Under-rated, Great Deviant, Great Gallery*
Every now and then I come across someone on dA who has a spectacular gallery that is somehow so under rated and so under viewed it literally drops my jaw. This artist is absolutely spectacular, such a beautiful gallery of nudes and portraits I really cant believe that people are not flocking to her page in their thousands on a daily basis. Well heres a feature that will hopefully help people get to where they need to be and that place is the gallery of IlonaShevchishina and here are a few thumbs to give a preview of what you will find:

Nine TimesI saw him nine times.
The first time we were both sitting in the room together, getting ready to take the math test that would determine our placement. I was scatterbrained and throwing things around, trying to find the pencils that I had known I would need but had still just tossed in my purse. He was lounging backwards in his chair, looking for all the world as though he didn’t have a single care in the world, including the upcoming test. It annoyed me, that I was frantic and ready to scream, while someone else could be that relaxed.
I tested out of the class.
I don’t know if he did.
The second time I saw him, it was a few months after I arrived on campus. He was the one rushing and frantic this time, running across the square. He was probably late for class, though I had no way of knowing for sure. I was already lost in my own thoughts and ideas, deciding on my major and convincing people that yes, this is what I really want to do with my life. If they weren
